TechMedia Network Inc. announced that is has acquired BuyerZone from Reed Business Information.

TMN is a digital tech and science publisher with proprieties like, TopTenReviews and LAPTOP. BuyerZone is an SMB purchasing and lead-generation platform with more than one million registered buyers and over 8,500 sellers on network.

Lead generation was a top priority for TMN, and although its sites were organically surfacing leads, the company wanted to do more. Rather than developing its own platform in house, TMN developed a partnership with BuyerZone in June 2013; and COO, Doug Llewellyn, suggests the merger seemed like a logical next step soon into the collaboration. “Strategically BuyerZone fit much more cleanly with TechMedia Network than it did with Reed,” he says. “Buyerzone’s business model is 100-percent in sync with ours.”

Llewellyn also says the company is molding its other properties around a similar theme-helping buyers make decisions. “The way our users come to TopTenReviews and TechMedia Network to find information and make buying decisions is squarely in line with the way the BuyerZone platform works,” he says.

TechMedia, a media company and content network, has acquired BuyerZone.

TechMedia operates a network of websites that are technology and science related, including Laptop, Business News Daily, Tom’s Hardware, and Top Ten Reviews.  TechMedia says it has “72 million engaged tech and science enthusiasts” monthly.

BuyerZone is a lead-generation commerce site. It brings together SMBs who need business products and services, with vendors.  A small business owner or manager goes to BuyerZone to locate vendors and get price quotes for phone systems, payroll services, copiers, forklifts and other services and supplies.  BuyerZone said in its announcement that it has “over one million registered buyers and a network of more than 8,500 sellers across 150-plus product and service categories.”

BuyerZone was formerly owned by Reed Business information.  Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

These kinds of combinations can make sense.  By adding a commerce component, content sites hope to expand their revenue streams. With direct commerce they do not have to rely solely on traditional advertising or subscriptions.

Commerce platforms likewise have an incentive to pair up.  With Amazon seeming to rule the world of consumer e-commerce, and Google displacing commerce through its direct shopping results, it can be hard to grow a commerce platform today. Commerce platforms always need more buyers.  Content draws buyers in.

The expansion means TechMedia Network will be getting access to an e-commerce channel and can make money from lead generation, not just advertising. It already bills itself as the third-largest tech publisher in the world, after CNET and Ziff-Davis.

BuyerZone, which has been in business since 1992, has facilitated 7 million leads and tens of billions of dollars in transactions, according to a spokesperson for TMN.
